I'm hesitant to buy the body in case this thing doesn't really work out. I'll be using an old TA02(tamiya) buggy since I have experience with making chassis for them and the shaft driven drive train is easy to modify. As opposed to another thought about an old HPI RS4MT I have, harder to extend a belt driven chassis. I'm not planning anything like brushless or anything terribly tough on this, essentially a touring car, haha. I've built a few TA02 hummers into scale rigs though so I know how they tick. They are all plastic though so the durability won't be on par with traxxas.

Then at least you won't have much tied up into it if it doesn't work.

Good plan, even a busted up one would work for mockup.
