i searched and came up with not the info i was looking for so i will ask.
what are you guys gearing at with a vxl ?
im geared at 18/86 with a 7 cell pack. motor runs at about 144 and esc at about 100 same with pack.

That's what I'm running as well. I ordered an infrared temp gauge to check temps as well. I've touched both the ESC, Motor, and battery and they get hot but not to the point where it burns.
I'm going to try the 23 spur gear next and see what kind of performance I get. I'm running Venom packs 7 cell 8.4v 4200mah Nims. I've got some 3S 11.1 5000mah from SPC on order.

i got some good news. i went out today and tried a 23/86 and the truck was faster and ran cooler as well. im guessing the motor was over working ?? im not sure as it goes against every thing i learned.
the esc temp did go up from 100 to 120. the pack was at 112 after a full run

Cool! When you say faster, do you mean more top speed or acceleration? I would have guessed more top speed.
On another note, when you first installed your VXL did you have any problems with the XL ESC lipo cutoff? I put a freshly charged 8.4 in there and it was flashing red for the lipo cut off. I had to turn it off in order to let it run but thought that it was strange.
Did you do the same thing? Most people have recommended to keep it on but I can't.
Just installed a Spektrum DX3R and love the range and the tweaks. I'll install the 23 gear tonight and run it tomorrow.

if your not running lipo turn the cut off to off. Otherwise it'll turn off after a VERY quick blast of throttle

I think I'm done playing with gearing!!!,,23/90 7cell for me,good top speed and still does great burn-outs!! 140's on motor runnig hard on the street
