Does anybody have a serious answer for this serious question? Also, what does the "R" next to 3.5R stand for? Racing? And if I get the 3.5R system, will I be able to safely run LiPo/Li Ion with it?

I can't say about he Novaks, Haven't run them I run the Castle Creations Sidewinder 4600 & it's MORE than enough for the Slash. I've seen the 5700"s in them & the guys weren't happy, just way too much for the Slash.

What is better? Mamba Max, or Sidewinder?

The Mamba max will handle the faster motors, but if your just going to use it in the Slash. The Sidewinder is fine & cheaper too. You can get the Sidewinder/4600 motor for about 145.00

I run a Novak SS5800-
Basically the new Havoc a best as i understand. At times, its a bit overkill even on 2s lipo. I agree that a 4600 Mamba or something close to that will be sufficient.
the novak 3.5 and 4.5 are WAY too much for this application. WAY too much. Not even in a good way. If you want to do nothing but straight line drag racing, then maybe,...but thats about it. It's like a Hemi in a pull behind wagon- it is possible, but just useless.

I guess you should disclose what you use your slash for...and what you want it to do, then it might be easier to help you aim in the right direction

actually, i think the 3.5R is completely the wrong application. it's aimed more for touring cars.
Remember, with the 3.5R, you are looking at 77,700 RPM's with 2s, and 116,550 on 3s...not even sure if it would hold together.
