that looks really great. I was wondering how you got the different colors to turn out so well? I just cut and painted my first body on my own and it didn't turn out like I had hoped. part of it is due to the moron at the hobby shop giving me wrong information about base coat and non base coat paints. I tried to paint the front silver and the rear orange. even though I was extremely careful in putting the masking tape on and cutting it. the tape still bled a little and left a funny cloud in a couple small spots where it was applied. its a jconcepts illuzion body. I don't know if this is a comon problem with them. thanks in advance for any help you can give.

This kind of seals the edge of the tape and won't allow the heavier coat of paint to bleed into it. I hope this helps and good luck.

great looking paint I don't have the time, nor airbrush to do it. Props to you for something so sweet NICE LID for sure!! But you don't need an airbrush to replicate or do something nice like that, just a little tape a hobby knife and some rattlecans will do the trick. I've won dozens of concours comps, back when they used to have such things, and never touched an airbrush in my life.

I don't know if this is a comon problem with them. thanks in advance for any help you can give. I don't know what the "moron" at the hobby shop told you, but there are some basic rules to painting that if followed religiously will usually give reliable results:- DO NOT RUSH !! The worst paintjobs I've ever done, or seen the results of, were as a result of being in a hurry and/or lack of patience.
- wash your hands, there's no telling where they've been, and at best the oils on your fingers will leave marks on the lexan that will show up rather oddly when everything's said and done.
- draw whatever design you have planned on the outside of the body with a sharpie pen on top of the overspray film. this gives you a couple of different chances to work out what looks good before you slap down tape or paint.
- wash the inside of the body with dishwashing detergent, some without any handsofteners in it, so as to remove all the mold-release agents/oils remaining on the body from manufacturing.
- don't rely in the edge of the masking tape to give you a perfect sharpe edge for lines, and instead lay the tape down and cut your lines using a sharp hobby/exacto knife (making sure not to pierce the body shell, of course)
- once you have your "design" all laid out, go back and rub down the edges of the tape with a fingernail so as to help the tape secure to the lexan
- then decide your order of paint application -- painting the dark shades first, and that way they don't make your lighter colors look darker than you had planned. Silver IS a dark color, so make sure and paint it before any lighter colors too or it'll make your bright orange look pumkin orange
- coat quanity should be roughly between two and four light coats. 2 if you want a lighter shade, and 4 if you're going darker.
- leave enough time between the various colors for each color to dry, at least semi so, before going on to the next color or paint has this odd way of mixing (sometimes I even wait overnight just to make sure)
- also wait to remove any tape until the paint is dry, or nearly so, or the paint that's on the tape will pull away from it and want to give you a squiggly edge on the lexan
- finally, keep in mind that ALL colors (except for black) need a backing coat to give off their true color shade -- candy and metallic paints need to be backed with silver (or gold if you want a little darker hue), and everthing else needs to be backed with white.
- bingo, you're done!

Good? That's an awesome paint job! I can tell a lot of thought and prep-work went into this lid. Fantastic job. ;D I really like the scheme you came up with as well. Steve
