This was a project I planned a few months ago, shortly after I got the Slash. I knew I wanted a Rustler again. Lucky for me, someone here had one up for sale. I bought it. When it arrived it looked like this minus the damage:
I was really excited to start working on the truck. After breaking the caster block I decided to go all RPM; new front and rear A-arms, front and rear bearing carriers, caster blocks, and a wide front bumper for those hits I'm sure the truck would take.
After recieveing the RPM stuff, i realized the arms for the rear were longer than the arms currently on the truck. which mean the rear axels and camber links would be too short as well. So, i had to get those. I picked up some stock Traxxas rear axels, and went with the blue anodized Camberlink set for the front and rear to match the blue RPM parts.
To put all the RPM stuff on the truck, i picked up a set of titanium hinge pin set from Lunsford Racing for added strength. The set doesn't come with E-clips, though, so I had to get some from the local hobby shop. I also got Traxxas' red anodized aluminum bellcrank for the steering.
As i was looking for wheels and tires, i decided to go with the stock wheels and tires that alerady come on the X-L5 Rustler. I liked the chrome look of them, and they worked very nicely. I also decided to upgrade to the high torgue waterprrof servo for teh steering, big bore shocks front and rear, and the Velineon Brushless system.
To top it all off, I went with JC concepts Illuzion direct fit Rustler body. Unfortunately, it came to me damagedm but I made due with it and am getting a new one for free. I sprayed it in regulat blue, added some decals and was ready to go. url=http://imageshack.us][/url]
As you might be able to tell, the truck sags big time in the rear. I think the added weight of the Velineon, combined with the stock shock oil, as well as the old springs, causes this. Also, the front of the truck sits higher than id like, mostly from the body mount. I hope soon to rectify this, and already have ideas for some new parts i want to get, like aluminun casterblocks and bearing carriers, as well as some stronger springs and heavier shock oil. All in all this truck took a total of about 15 man hours to complete. as well as over 600 dollars, from the price of the original truck, to all the parts spent on it. But it was fun, and well worth it, and i now have some i am proud of.
