So what's everyone's take on Spec Racing? Take the Slash class for example. I know some places you can only change shock oil and rx. Other places just make you run the stock tires and motor, can change the other stuff. What do you feel would be ideal for spec class?

IMO, it is good for the sport. People like me that are budget minded like it because you can start racing for less than $300.
They should also have a mod class for those that have the money to burn to mod out their trucks.

I can see a box stock, super stock and open class. That's how I feel it should be.

I can see three but in reality probably just 2. 1 rule though I think should be in open is the tires still have to be a CORR style tire and fit within the wheel wells or real close No pinspikes or anything like that. After all we going going after some type of resemblance. But that is just my .02 about it.

I like the idea of a spec class with only being able to change stuff like shock oil and RX because it really keeps the cost down for alot of people that otherwise wouldn't be able to stay competative. However there should also be a class where you can change some other stuff...like tires and shocks...but have to retain an approved brushed motor/ESC/battery combo. And an open class where anything goes.

The problem with a Slash Spec class is going to be the same problem with every single other spec class they've tried over the years, and it will fail for the same reasons. People seem to think they can save money by doing it, when in reality it will be the guys that have deep pockets that will dominate because they can afford to drop the money into a brand new truck every few weeks to keep fresh parts on it. Pretty soon the guys looking to save a dime will get bored, or get tired of getting beat by the same guys, and they'll drop out and the class will dry up. The first thing people have been talking about is changing out the radio gear, and it seems pretty shortsighted to leave people thinking they need to put a $200 radio system in a $175 truck to be competitive.
Box stock is fine for the new guys, it gives them a low-dollar place to start. From that point there needs to be classes relative to all other RC classes like hot-stock with a motor limit and modified for the guys that like to tinker and work on their trucks.

I think that Spec is a good idea, as long as there are other classes available for modified. The spec does need to be refined though, at least where I am. Aside from the normal stuff like gearing, shock oil, shock caps and radio gear, there is also the option to run a 2s lipo instead of a 6 cell. I know its only a 7.4 volt to 7.2 difference, but the weight differential is huge. I am not the best driver, but I do okay, and have swapped driving with some one that has a lipo and same gearing with mine in a 6 cell Nimh, and feel a big difference. Offering lipo as an option takes away from the entire point of keeping it cheap and spec. Plus, where are the pre-race tech inspections? We don't do it. Cheating is not new, and its not hard to hide stuff if not inspected. I bought a Slash to play around with while I wait for the TT Pro-2, but now stay away from Spec racing and have more fun with brushless.

At the track i race at there is only a stock slash class. They allow stock or switch tires and stock or any proline body. You must have stock motor and chassie. They do this to help keep costs down, but they should have a mod class for the people who want to spend all kinds of money on performance parts.

Spec was ok when it was just the Slash.
Now their needs to be a RTR class to keep the affordability of the spec class, and then we need to get behind the SCT class and ROARs rules and specifications.

I think with all the different brands, I think the choices in race classes should reflect.
